Are you packed yet? In a just a few shorts weeks you will be a freshman once a gain. It's hard to believe but yes, you will need to learn many new faces, names, buildings, professors and classes. Remember that freedom is great but responsibility is even greater. You are not alone in the confusion of starting college. Introduce yourself, ask questions, and have fun. Time management is crucial to your success in college; keep a record of your academic and social commitments.

Before you head off to college research the items below and prepare yourself for this next journey.

Campus Safety

Colleges are required to provide a copy of the three most recent years of crimes on their campus. Check out was had been happening on your campus. The Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the landmark federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, that requires colleges and universities across the US to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses.

Crime is up on college campuses - be prepared and be wise! Burglary, followed by car theft, is the most common forms of campus crime. Do not take expensive jewelry with you to college and etch your name in all electronics.  Be proactive and not reactive about your safety!

Computer Access

Before you arrive on campus find out how to create and access your campus email account. It is very important that you read and follow the computer usage guidelines established by your college or university. If you are bringing your own computer to campus research access, fees, and requirements before you arrive. If you do not have a computer but are thinking about purchasing one prior to starting college, it is suggested that you contact your institution first. Campuses may offer student discounts - check out their purchasing programs.

Finances

Keep in mind there are additional costs once you arrive on campus. Create a budget and remember expenses like laundry, course materials, lab equipment, food and snacks, parking fees, gas, document and processing fees, clothing, fraternity or sorority dues, computer access costs, service fees for registration or class drop/adds.

If you plan to set up a bank account on or near your campus check out the locations, procedures, ATM access, online banking, and more. Ask about student accounts - many offer no or low required balance accounts.

Be aware of credit card debt! Student loans are not the only debt that students are graduating from college with; many also have high balances on credit cards that they acquired while in college. Most students do not understand the costs of having a credit card until it's too late. Discuss credit card options with your parents, use a debit card, shop for low interest rates, check on fees, and read all fine print.
